Tuesday 6:00 pm - 90 minutes

In this Tuesday evening class we will discover and revisit light activation exercises for the whole body.
An intent is to renew our inherent knowledge of low-impact movement possibilities
-- whether for day-to-day activities, sports, or anything else.
Gentle core engagement, easy balance play and working through spinal directions will be integrated into each class.
We will seek to develop mindful yet intuitive movement habits and refine our relationship towards physical effort. Transferring body knowledge "off the mat" will be addressed.

We will continually create body awareness via: imagery, breath study, and simple supine movement.
We will keep a low centre of gravity as we travel through some lower and upper body study. We will query our beliefs surrounding effort, as well as our relationships with our own bodies.
Nakedness as an evolving concept will be a focus of practice. We will touch on meditation techniques.
Working together, we will seek to strengthen our experience within the body and to question how our movement is informed.

Who are these classes for?

This class is presented for all levels, all ages
and body types. Men who are seeking relief from strain or pain with movement. Men seeking new awareness of aleviation of pain informed by how we move our body will find a great fit in the Tuesday evening classes.

What are some of the benefits of these classes?
Participants can take away new skills and practises directed towards:
awareness,
stillness and
peace.
These awarenesses are transferable to more complicated situations and movements off the mat while we live our everyday lives

Men will leave the class, feeling both aware and relaxed and perhaps even with a sense of deeper well being.

Why we practice
together as men:

As men we gather together to:
nurture discipline in the work,
to know that we are not alone,
and to find the fellowship

The discipline, knowledge and fellowship can continue to express itself even after we have left the studio.

Our Yoga practices can be a time for yourself, where you can be yourself and be surrounded by other like-minded men.

Why we practice
together while naked:
Our reasons for practising while naked include:
showing one's whole self,
enhancing honesty and
finding freedom from shame and
the breakdown of inhibition.

Everyone's experience of practising while naked will be ever-changing and a chance for discoveries about ourselves.

From Andy
Speaking of his Yoga Journey
I was exposed to yoga asana as a young athlete and practised sporadically until 2010 when I found several Toronto teachers who guided me through other areas of practice.
I was a student in the Yoga Sanctuary's Evolving Spirit teacher training in 2012-13 and began teaching both naked and clothed yoga thereafter.
Over time my offerings have specialized to reflect what I most value in the practice -- stillness, awareness, and peace. "

It is always in response to something,
it always has our
best interest at heart”

Awaken Studio Toronto

Andy has shared his yoga practice with men at the Awaken Studio Toronto, from the beginning. The first classes were offered in the fall of 2013.
The courage and strength that Andy brought to this new program has provided a supportive and innovative platform for the Naked Yoga classes at the Awaken Studio.

Andy set the tone and was the first to ask, "Why do we gather as men and why do practice naked?" I am grateful for both of these questions as they have been a guide as the progams have developed and grown over the years.

Andy has brought his grounded, soft and insightful energy to our weekly practices to this day. I am glad for Andy's dedication, centered approach and compassionate care for the men who attend the Tuesday Evening Naked Yoga classes.
I am looking forward to the newest expansion and additions to our classes as we traverse into new territory again. There will be new energy, new information and bright new awareness. I am truly grateful and humbled for the gifts that Andy brings to the Awaken Studio.

What's This About Naked Yoga for Men
Written by J. Colby Smith ~ Shankara Studio

" ...In many ways, naked yoga is one of the most equalizing practices you can engage in. For better or worse, we all walk around covered by layers. We have our work persona, our home persona, our gym persona, and so on. Sometimes these personas integrate. But oftentimes these personas, these layers, change the way we interact with one another. Not only that, they can change the way we interact with and see ourselves.

I often say at the beginning of class, “This is an opportunity to free ourselves of those layers—obviously the physical layers of clothing—but more importantly, the layers of stuff we carry between each of us.”

Once the clothes are gone, I find it’s much easier to genuinely connect, genuinely see one another, and put down all of the perceived crap between us. We’re people. We’re bodies. We’re beautiful. Each body is inherently different. We may have different skin tones, different bone structures, different habits with regard to how we hold ourselves and move, different muscle tone or lack thereof.
...

Our society is continually bombarded with images of perfection—perfect bodies, perfect abs, perfect hair and teeth. Everywhere we look we’re confronted with a product that will help us achieve that perfection. It turns out, it won’t. And it turns out, those bodies aren’t perfect. Most aren’t even healthy or achievable without airbrushing.

I recognize this on a conscious level; and yet, I still have such a hard time not comparing. For me, naked yoga is truly the only time I feel 100% comfortable in my own skin. It may seem crazy, but it’s true. ... "
